As a part-time paranormal investigator, I’ve explored many spine-tingling locations over the years. Yet, there’s something about our upcoming investigation at The Old Convent in Andover that makes even seasoned ghost hunters like myself pause. Could this be the most haunted location in the UK? Some think so. I would argue that the Ancient Ram Inn and 30 East Drive take that accolade.. now, I’m about to find out for myself.
The History of the Old Convent
Dating back to the 1700s, The Old Convent has seen many owners and tenants come and go, it is said that none of them stay for very long. It’s a sprawling, multi-storied estate with 80 rooms, abandoned servants' quarters, and a cellar that seems to draw out the bravest and the most sceptical alike. Its walls are steeped in history, from its time as a convalescent hospital for American officers during World War II to its later years as a girls’ boarding school run by the Benedictine Order.
But its past isn’t just defined by what we can read in history books. Those who have lived and worked in the house have spoken of seeing shadowy figures, hearing disembodied voices, and felt ghostly presences. Soon, we have the thrill of uncovering this location’s hidden secrets which will have us all on edge.
A Place of Tragedy
As with many haunted places, The Old Convent has a tragic backstory. The most talked-about apparitions are the nuns who once walked these halls. One is said to have tragically died after setting herself on fire in the servants’ quarters. Another nun reportedly met her end after falling down the main staircase. Several others passed away of natural causes, but their spirits are believed to linger in the rooms they once occupied.
There have also been reports of ghostly giggles, likely from the era when the building was a boarding school for girls. Could these be the echoes of students who once played and laughed here, now reaching out from the beyond? And what about the US servicemen who recuperated in these very rooms during World War II? Their presence is palpable in the stories shared by visitors. The Serviceman's emotional trauma may well be embedded in the fabric of the building, will we witness stone tape events?
One of the more curious mysteries surrounds a hidden tunnel that connects the house to the nearby village. The tunnel’s exit has been located, but the entrance within the house remains elusive. Who was it that once used this tunnel and WHY?
The Hauntings
The reports from current owners, visitors, and even staff members who initially dismissed any talk of hauntings are bone-chilling. Non-believers have been “converted” by their own paranormal experiences. Loud bangs that shake beds, cold spots that appear out of nowhere, and even the apparition of a crying little girl have all been reported. One of the more unsettling accounts is of people hearing knocks at the door and a voice calling, “Can I come in?” only to discover there’s no one there.
In my own experience, it's often the sceptics who end up most profoundly affected by such encounters. The residual energy from so many souls—whether nuns, students, or soldiers—seems to have imprinted itself on this house. With every overnight investigation, there’s an opportunity to connect with these restless spirits.
What I Hope to Find
I have been preparing meticulously for this investigation. I’ll be bringing along a full arsenal of paranormal detection equipment, including EMF meters, night-vision camera, and voice recorder, cat-balls and dowsing rods. Personally, I’m most excited to explore the decaying servants' quarters and the pitch-dark cellar, both of which seem to be epicentres of paranormal activity. If the stories hold true, these areas could yield some of the most compelling evidence of the paranormal I’ve encountered to date.
I’m particularly intrigued by the story of the nun who set herself on fire. There's something about the intensity and emotion of such a tragic death that often leaves an imprint on a place, a ghostly echo of pain and sorrow. I’ve found that these types of deaths can create energy that is particularly reactive to paranormal investigations. The Old Convent’s history of death, sorrow, and mystery is a perfect backdrop for a night of ghost hunting.
Will the spirits reveal themselves to me? Only time will tell. I’ll be stepping through those creaky doors with an open mind and a steady hand on my EMF meter, ready to face whatever lies beyond.
